Mermaid Quadrant Chart: Axes, Quadrant Labels, and Plotted Points

The quadrant chart is a two-by-two matrix: two labelled axes, four named quadrants, and points plotted by coordinates between 0 and 1. It is the Mermaid version of the prioritisation grids used in product reviews and risk workshops.

Because coordinates are relative, the chart never needs real units. Decide what "high" and "low" mean on each axis, place each item by judgement, and the picture does the arguing.

  • risk-impact matrices
  • eisenhower box
  • competitive landscapes

Common mistakes

These are the parse errors that come up most, including in code written by ChatGPT and Claude. Paste any failing diagram into the editor and it marks the offending line.

  • Coordinates outside 0 to 1 ([3, 7]).

Fix: Scale to the unit square. Points beyond 1 are clipped.

  • Axis label without the arrow (x-axis Effort).

Fix: Both ends are optional, but the arrow is what separates them: x-axis Low --> High. A single label without an arrow also parses.

  • Point names containing a colon.

Fix: The colon starts the coordinates. Rephrase the name.

FAQ

Can I have more than four quadrants?

No. For a 3x3 grid use an XY chart with reference lines drawn as extra series, or a block diagram.

Is the quadrant chart good for a competitive landscape?

Yes, it is the classic use. Name the axes after the two dimensions buyers care about and plot each competitor as a point.
